Exercise: What you may not know:

In this blog we will be talking a bit more about exercise. We have touched upon its benefits in other blogs, but we feel like this is such an important subject, too important to overlook. We will talk about the benefits it has on your immune system, keeping healthy and the benefits to mental health.

The Immune System:

According to the Journal of Applied Physiology (JAP), regular moderate exercise is commonly associated with reduced incidence of infection. This means that people who regularly exercise are less likely to become infected, therefore enhancing the immune system. Please do note, this is moderate exercise, NOT strenuous exercise.
Strenuous exercise however, can cause parts of the immune system to fail for a temporary period of time, usually around 3-24 hours after the exercise has taken place. For this reason, if you are exercising strenuously for a period of time, be aware of infections.

Mental Health:

It is said that exercise releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel better, and regular moderate exercise may also help you concentrate, sleep and look better too. Regular exercise is a great combatant to depression, low self-esteem, and other depressive mental states.
A few more benefits of exercise on mental health include:

  • less tension, stress and mental fatigue
  • a natural energy boost
  • improved sleep
  • a sense of achievement
  • focus in life and motivation
  • less anger or frustration
  • a healthy appetite

Setting achievable, realistic target goals is important to receive the mental health benefits that relate to exercise, as achieving these goals will improve self-esteem and motivation to continue.
Exercise is commonly undertaken both solo and within a community, so if you wish to, you could start up walking, jogging or running by yourself, but the opportunity to get involved with other like minded people is also there. Exercise is a great way to meet new people, from all different levels of ability. You could consider joining a gym if you wish to meet new people while exercising.

After consideration, for the average person, we find that regular, but moderate exercise is the best option. It allows your body to grow to its ideal strength, while keeping your immune system boosted and mind positive.
